This course is designed for the neonatal clinician to understand how involving the family in the everyday care of new-borns can have a positive impact on both the infant and the parents and lead to a family relationship that is strong, and leads to empowered and satisfied parents when leaving the NICU with their infant.

By the end of the course, the clinician will be able to:

  • Discuss how Preterm infants are increasingly likely to survive but the developmental disadvantages of preterm birth continue to be a challenge for neonatal care
  • Understand that Infants born before completion of the last trimester of pregnancy are exposed to experiences that do not fit their developmental expectations.
  • Describe how Infants born before completion of the last trimester of pregnancy are exposed to experiences that do not fit their developmental expectations.
  • Discuss how behavioural observation is the key to understanding the developmental needs of a preterm or vulnerable Newborn.
