Pre Transport Stabilisation of the infant with HIE

Instructor: Carol Jackson | Nurse Consultant | MSc, BSc Neonatal Sciences

235 STUDENTS ENROLLED

Infants with Moderate – Severe Hypoxic Ischaemic Encephalopathy require specialised and critical care, in a NICU that is able to offer the necessary Therapeutic Hypothermia and intensive care treatment required. By necessity therefore, many of these infants require transportation to a specialised NICU after birth. The role of the transport teams in stabilising these infants before during and after transport is critically key to success in treatment and management of the infant with HIE.

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Understand the urgency of referral to a specialist NICU with cooling facilities and appropriate intensive care
  • Describe the process of pre-transport stabilisation including physiological monitoring, aEEG monitoring and the use of cooling adjuncts
  • Understand the safety aspects during neonatal transportation
  • Understand the importance of family support and communication throughout the transfer process
